Update

I have come across a couple of books recently that might be of interest for people working on the earlier end of the cathedrals strand:

Margot Fassler, The Virgin of Chartres: Making History through Liturgy and the Arts (New Haven, 2010) talks about how history is recorded and remembered when no one is actually ‘writing’ history down.

Eliza Garrison, Ottonian Imperial Art and Portraiture: The Artistic Patronage of Otto III and Henry II (Farnham, 2012) on how certain artworks given to cathedrals become sites for contested memories by successive patrons.

  1. Many thanks indeed, Sarah! Both books would be extremely useful for me, so thanks for flagging them up, as I’d not come across those before.
